 Rifampicin was introduced in 1967, as a major addition to the cocktail-drug treatment of tuberculosis and inactive meningitis, along with pyrazinamide, isoniazid, ethambutol and streptomycin ("PIERS"). Rifampicin requires a prescription in North America.
