    Properties of styrene

    (1) physical properties

    Styrene is a colorless liquid, the boiling point 145 ℃, soluble in water, soluble in methanol, ethanol, ethyl ether solvents, etc. Polystyrene (PS) resins can be self-polymerized and easily copolymerized with other unsaturated compounds containing double bonds.

     

    (2) chemical properties

    C6H5 - CH = CH2

    Polymerization speed: the polymerization speed is very slow at room temperature, but the polymerization inhibitor should be added in the monomer.

     

    Use of styrene:

    1. PS (polystyrene), ABS

    Styrene copolymerizes with butadiene and acrylonitrile, and the copolymer can be used to produce ABS engineering plastics.

    Copolymerization with butadiene yields latex (SBL) and synthetic rubber (SBR);
